Debuting on YouTube in March of 2015, Hot Ones from First We Feast has taken the pop culture world by storm.
A-list celebrities from all walks of the entertainment industry have toughed it out to see if they can make it to “The Last Dab”!
There has been no shortage of top-tier guests, from world-renowned celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay to former NBA superstar Shaq to singer-songwriter Billie Eilish.
What I believe is even more impressive than the list of celebrities that have appeared on the show are the actual hot sauces themselves.
Craft hot sauce makers whose sauces have made the cut and have appeared on Hot Ones have seen their popularity skyrocket thanks to their inclusion.
Are you a fan of the show? Have you wondered which hot sauces have appeared to be the best?
To date, there have been 27 seasons of the show.
I thought it would be fun to gather my favorite – the best Hot Ones sauces – and share them with the world.
The following list contains my guidelines when putting the Top 10 together.
1. Flavor First. Bottom line. I can’t stress this enough. The Scoville Units are a selling point of the hot sauces and the show, especially with the later-round hot sauces, but I’m looking for what Hot Ones hot sauce tastes best overall.
2. Characteristics. I am looking for both uniqueness and versatility. For example, if the sauce has a popular flavor profile (such as a garlic hot sauce), I ask myself, “What makes this one better than other sauces of that profile”? If the sauce has a rare flavor profile found in hot sauces, is it good enough that I could use it on various foods?
3. Exclusions. For this list, I am not considering “grocery store brands.” The “grocery store brands” sauces were primarily featured in the first couple of seasons of the show. You and I could argue back and forth whether these hot sauces constitute “grocery store brands” or not, but for the sake of this blog, I did not consider the following for this ranking:
Cholula, Crystal, El Yucateco, Huy Fong Foods Sriracha, Original Louisiana, Tabasco, Tapatio, Texas Pete, or Valentina (Black Label).
4. Brand/Season Limits. The number of times brands can appear on the list if they’ve had different sauces in different seasons is unlimited, as is the number of sauces that can occur due to their season.
5. Disclaimer. Since starting Flower City Flavor Company and becoming part of the hot sauce community, I have gotten to know quite a few makers, some of whom are now genuine friends. Some of these makers are on this list. My personal or business relationships with hot sauce companies, makers, or affiliates did not influence my selections. My sincere take ultimately comes down to my first criterion, flavor.
With all that said, it’s time to look at my favorites from “the show with hot questions and even hotter wings!”
